Whether you’re a rockclimber, hiker, biker or hard-core mountaineer, the views from Haus Altenberger will get you excited. From your private balcony, some of Austria’s best mountains spread out in front of you. So you can plan your route over breakfast, or relax and re-cap your day’s adventure in the evening. With the town, lake and mountains all easily accessible straight out the door, you’ll find Pension Altenberger truly is the best starting point for your hiking, mountaineering and climbing adventures around Zell am See Kaprun.

Wide, delightful and promising – Hiking in the grass mountains

Begin your hiking adventure straight out Haus Altenberger’s front door. As you step out onto Dr. Mueller Promenade you’ll have incredible views over the town, lake and surrounding mountains. From there you can head the Schmittenhoehe for some panoramic vistas of Alps. If you don’t feel like hiking all the way, a cable car offers a quick and relaxing trip to the top, with amazing views all the way. From the Schmittenhoehe summit, high above the lake and Zell am See, you can see more than thirty 3,000 meter high mountains – all without having to do the climbing! The path along the ‘Pinzgauer Spaziergang’ is a real pleasure to hike. The views take your breath away, and not because of exhaustion. The views of the surrounding mountains are incredible – it’s no co-incidence that Schmittenhoehe is renown as Austria’s most scenic ski area.

Steep, rugged and breathtaking, the Stone Mountains are a mountaineer’s paradise.

If you want more than just a pleasant hike and great views, there are plenty of steep walls and big mountains to explore for those with the equipment and experience. In the Rock Mountains around Lofer and Saalfelden you’ll find terrain to challenge all climbers.

Experienced and fit hikers can climb a lot of different attractive summits. Still not hard enough? Well then you should put your climbing shoes on and go vertical. Lots of different climbing routes are provided and if you are not that experienced just yet, you should check out the rock-climbing-parks in Bruck and Ferleiten to get your skills ready for bigger challenges. If the weather isn’t the best you can always go to the indoor climbing walls in Saalfelden or at the Indoor Climbing in Zell am See.

A majestic, frozen world – the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern

There is a large selection of great ice and glacier education routes throughout the park, but you can get started right behind Kaprun, where Kitzsteinhorn glacier offers visitors easy access to the world of ice and snow. Park Rangers and Mountain Guides are available to show you through the park safely. But even if you’re not up for a high alpine experience, make sure you visit the excellent National Park museum in Mittersill to learn about Austria’s alpine terrain.
