Wherever you are in Zell am See, beautiful Lapeke Zell provides an eyecatching backdrop. It’s the region’s centerpiece. Straight from mountain streams, its crystal-clear water is pure enough to drink, but you’ll notice the lake’s colour shift from deep blue to turquoise depending on the time of day.

After a hard day riding or hiking the tracks above the town, Lake Zell offers a well-deserved refreshing dip. In winter the lake freezes over but in summer the water temperature can reach 24 degrees celsius.

Water sports for all weather

Zell am See Kaprun’s sporting attractions aren’t limited to the mountains. Lake Zell has it’s share of sporting history. Surfing and sailing have a long tradition on the lake. Today the Olympic sailing duo Hans Peter Steinacher and Roman Hagara exercise regularly by the lake. You can’t miss their 20m high, 13m long Red Bull catamaran in summer.

When the wind’s not blowing, there’s still plenty to do. Hire a kayak or give stand up paddling a try. Rental equipment and courses are available around the lake.

Lake Zell is also a popular swimming area. Every year thousands of competitors come to compete in the Ironman 70.3. Lots of athletes come here solely to train or compete in the Ironman, while endurance athletes from all over the world appreciate the training possibilities in and around the beautiful lake.

Relax and unwind on and around the lake

Life on Lake Zell doesn’t always revolve around sports. Along the shore you’ll find some great places to chill out and recharge your batteries. Go for a walk around the lake or visit the beach baths and sunbathing areas. If you’re after some fun, try beach volleyball or go roller skating along the beach promenade for some moderate exercise. Cafes and bars dotted along the foreshore provide refreshments and snacks along the way.
